Committee Member profiles
Barrie Irons – President
Barrie is a well-known Hutchins icon within our community, recently having the Barrie Irons Oval named after him and is also an Honorary Old Boy. Barrie retired from teaching at Hutchins in 2015. For over 25 years Barrie has played an intricate role within the School as First XI cricket coach, Head of Senior School, Deputy Headmaster, Registrar, Liaison Officer and resident photographer. Barrie still works as a relief teacher and since retiring he has been spending as much time as possible with his family; either helping out at Bonorong Wildlife Sanctuary with his son Greg (’01) or playing the role of doting grandfather to his grandchildren – that is when he is not on the golf course!
Tom Windsor (’99) – Vice-President
Tom enjoyed 12 seasons with the HSOBFC as a passionate Reserves player, committee member and Vice-President. These days Tom is heavily involved with the Movember Foundation and enjoys spending his weekends with his wife, Susannah and their two young children, Fleur and Davey. Tom is part owner and Managing Director of Coverall Security.
John Groom (’86) – Secretary
John has been deeply engaged with the School for several decades, including serving on the School Board for nearly 10 years. His career includes legal practice, corporate and business ownership and he has now completed the circle by taking on the role of Director of Advancement at Hutchins. John works very closely with the President to ensure deep engagement with all Old Boys.
William Scott (’15) – Treasurer
William has already begun his involvement with the Old Boys through playing with the HSOBFC. William is currently studying Business and Economics full time at UTAS and working in the Financial Planning industry. William’s brother George finished Year 12 at Hutchins in 2019 and his sister Alice works at Hutchins in the Marketing and Communications Team.
Robert Dick (’53)
Robert has been involved with the HSOBA since 1956 where he has seen many changes over the years. As a former boarder and past President of the HSOBA, Robert brings a wealth of experience and is a passionate supporter of Hutchins and the values of the School.
Tom Vincent (’56)
Tom first joined the HSOBA Committee in 1975 and has been deeply involved ever since. Tom’s son Michael (’89) attended the School, as did his grandsons Thomas (’16) and Tim in their early years. Tom, the son of the late Ray Vincent (’27), was made an Honorary Life Member in 1996.
Chris Rae (’66)
Chris retired from teaching with his career at Hutchins spanning from 1972 to 2015. Chris also played an intricate role within the Hutchins community as Head of Boarding, Head of School House, Head of Senior School and coach of the First XVIII AFL team. Chris also played with the HSOBFC in 1978/79.
Richard Atkins (’87)
Richard has had a long involvement with the HSOBA and also the HSOBFC, both as a player and former President. Richard’s career spans professional services and business and he is currently an Executive Director at Zambrero Tasmania. Richard is a current Hutchins parent and also has a daughter at Fahan School.
Sean Tracey (’93)
Dr Sean Tracey is a senior research fellow at the Institute for Marine and Antarctic Studies, University of Tasmania. He works on a range of marine ecology and fisheries science issues to support local, national and international management of marine resources. Sean attended Hutchins from Kindergarten through to Year 12.
Andrew Isles (’10)
Andrew has had a long-standing involvement with The Hutchins School completing Kindergarten to Year 12. In 2017 Andrew was admitted to the Supreme Court of Tasmania as a Barrister and Solicitor and practices at Butler McIntyre & Butler. In his spare time, Andrew is a passionate Richmond Tigers supporter and enjoys playing golf.
Larry Owen (’10)
As a fairly recent leaver, Larry is excited about the opportunity to return to the School as a committee member of the HSOBA. Since graduating from Hutchins, he has completed a medical degree at UTAS and is currently working as a junior doctor at the Royal Hobart Hospital. Larry is also a keen sportsperson and has spent the last few years playing for the Hutchins School Old Boys’ Football Club which he has thoroughly enjoyed.
Edward Burrows-Cheng (’13)
After completing his degree at Bond University, Edward has returned home and is keen to give back to his school of 15 years. Edward was admitted to the legal profession in August 2018 and is now practising as a lawyer in commercial litigation at Dobson Mitchell Allport. Edward was School Captain in 2013 and his younger brother Oliver was School Captain in 2019. Edward also has four other brothers currently at the School.
Oliver Burrows-Cheng (’19)
As newly ‘retired’ School Captain, Oliver joins us as the Leavers of 2019 representative. Oliver’s older brother Edward was School Captain in 2013 and he also has four other brothers currently at the School.
